Field Guide to the Common Cuddler, pocket edition. Habitat: couches, beds and the back seat of any long car ride. Most active on rainy evenings and during the second episode of any show. Identifying features include a blanket, a pillow and a strong opinion about who gets the wall side. Call: a low contented sigh, or "your elbow is in my ribs." Approach slowly. Never wake a cuddler mid nap.

Experienced observers recognize several subspecies. The protective type curls around others and has been known to adjust a blanket without being asked. The clingy type wraps every available limb around the nearest warm body and does not let go until sunrise. The independent type needs personal space but stays connected through a single foot pressed against someone's shin. And the cozy type lies down with their head on a lap and waits for hair stroking like a contented cat.
