Which Hip-Hop Element Represents You?

Hip-hop (noun). A culture born at parties in the Bronx in the early 1970s, when DJs started looping the best drum breaks of funk records so dancers would never have to stop. Not to be confused with your uncle's attempt at rapping during a wedding toast, which is technically a separate genre called please sit down.

The story usually starts with DJ Kool Herc at a back to school party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in 1973, and it grew from there into four classic elements. The DJ controls the room from behind two turntables. The MC grabs the mic and turns rhymes into a contact sport. The breakers spin on their heads and freeze in poses that make chiropractors nervous. And the graffiti writers turn train cars and brick walls into giant colorful signatures.

Each element has its own personality, and so do you. Answer fifteen questions about parties, notebooks, sneakers and late nights, and we will tell you which element you carry. You don't need to rhyme. You don't need to spin. You only need honest answers and decent headphones.
