Scientists have discovered that there is a strong connection between our musical taste and personality traits. Music can evoke different emotions, and when choosing a particular song or album, we are often guided by mood. Interestingly, the same British researchers found that people who listen to a particular type of music differ in personality traits. The Music Taste test was created based on these experiments and research by UK scientists led by Adrian North, a psychology professor.
So, if the question is still swirling in your head – “What is my music taste?” then you’ve come to the right place. We will answer it with decibel precision.
Musical Taste And Your Personality
There is no denying that our musical taste carries certain stereotypes. Let’s use some examples to support this thesis. Rock listeners are often perceived as rebellious and somewhat crazy. In contrast, people who frequent opera houses are considered wealthy and well-educated. This may be true to some extent, but there will always be deviations from the norm. Therefore, we cannot lump every rock or rap listener together.
Researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh conducted an experiment involving just over 36,000 people. The experiment itself was not one of the complicated ones. The respondents were asked to rate 104 musical genres in terms of those they consider their favorite and to fill out a personal questionnaire identifying their character traits. To the researchers’ surprise, it turned out that fans of specific music genres circled almost identical answers in the personality test. It is worth noting that the respondents came from all over the world.
What did the researchers arrive at? The study found that jazz and classical music lovers enjoyed high levels of self-esteem and creativity. However, in addition to the traits that united the two groups, there were also those that separated them. Jazz fans tend to be sociable, while classical music listeners are more introverted. Rap fans are primarily extroverts, while country music listeners are shy and hardworking. Pop music fans have high self-esteem and are hardworking, sociable, and gentle but lack creativity. There were many more results, so if you’re curious, feel free to check out the experiment.
Similar analyses, but on a smaller scale, were conducted by British scholars Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic and Patrick Fagan, who also found a convergence between personality profiles and favorite music. In addition to exciting matches between a particular musical genre and personality traits, it was also discovered that men showed a greater tendency than women to listen to sad and moody songs. Surprised? Contrary to appearances, men are very affectionate; they just mask themselves well.
